MySQL and DATE

I just can't get it today....have been on too many sites now trying to work it out so here goes anyway...

Want to compare dates (have seen what a minefield this is!!)

So I had a little function that converted the current date into the yyyy-mm-dd format and then I could compare againt my date field which is stored in format yyyy-mm-dd (DATE type) .
However it returns as dd/mm/yyyy - am I right in thinking this is something to do with the regional settings on the web server?

Anyway, anyone have any ideas? I need to either convert the table value back to yyyy-mm-dd or somehow compare dd/mm/yyyy aaaaaahhahah!

So any suggestions would be nice

Thanks
Rob

Ha! I knew I have you all
As an aside, does anyone know why it can sort by dd/mm/yyyy but not compare such dates?

Go on someone - have a go!
