Domain and account setup

Hello,

I want to register 2 domain names (1x ????.co.uk and 1x ????.com) that both link to new 'Mega Deal' package. Can this all be done through Cat2 or do I need to register the domains elsewhere first?

If Cat2 can register the domains for me, how much will this be ontop of the £11.99/year for the 'Mega Deal' package?

Regards,

Steve

Charge for domain when taking out mega deal package?

An email exchange I had with Paul Redpath implied there was no charge for a new domain name when taking out a new package? Could you please clarify? If there is a charge, how much for a .org or .ork.uk ? When I ran through the online order form and specified a new domain name, no extra charge appeared. The reason I ask is that I have found a couple of host providers that do not charge for UK domains. Thanks.

If you already have a domain name and just have the dns changed to use c2 hosting then there is not charge for the first one (or however many your package allows) but to actually buy on then you will have to pay. Do you understand the difference?

I think .org.uk is the same price as .co.uk and .org is the same price as .com.

Jacob

Think I understand.

If I order a new domain name through catalyst, and have to pay £25. This seems very steep, I've found at least one provider that will throw .org.uk in for free on a similarly priced package (less disk-space, unlimited bandwidth).
If I register a new domain elsewhere, catalyst2 allow me one domain name to be routed to the site they host for me for free. Presumably I will have to pay the company who hold my domain name to reroute it to catalyst2?

It is more expensive to cover admin changes.

Depends, with 1and1.co.uk and ukreg.com they both include DNS management as part of buying a no frills domain name....

Hmmmm

Thanks Jacob. I have to say that the sites you mention charge about £2 for a .org.uk domain, with the ability to route wherever as part of the charge, whereas catalyst2 charge £25. That's a big difference. Are there advantages to catalyst2 registering the domain?

All you billing etc in one place, they do all the hard work for you. Be careful when buying a domain, yes they are cheaper but a lot of prices will not mention things like VAT, but generally if you are happy doing the admin yourself then it is cheaper.

A .co.uk domain at UK Reg is £6.93 for 2 years (inc vat) which includes your .org.uk extension you require.

A .com domain is £21.15 (inc vat) for 2 years.

Not sure why Catalyst2 charge so much for them unless they purposely don't really want to be doing domains but offer it for their customers?

Personally whilst UKREG is owned by the dreaded FASTHOSTS i've never had a problem with their domain service and use that over any others out there.
Configuring and transfering is easy and hassle free.

Right I'll try to fix confussions here!

Domain registration:
UK domains (anything ending in .uk ) are £25 for 2yrs
US domains (anything with a single extention part ie .com, .org, .net ) are £35 for 2yrs.
This is the price for the ownership of the domain for 2yrs. You can go with another company for this if you wish, admitably many other companies are cheaper. I think the reason why Cat2 charge that bit more is because at the moment its not automated, so the majority of that fee goes into admin costs of someone filling in the forums! If my understanding is correct this will become automated in future versions of Helm. As has been mentioned all the admin requirements of owning your own domain are taken care by Cat2 when you register a domain with them. Having said that it's not that hard to set up your domain up with another company, if the details of how to do this aren't in the knowledgebase they will be soon.

Domain Hosting:
The £2 fee you found out I have no idea where that came from.
You have a limit to the number of domains you can host at Cat2 depending on your package. If you wish to host aditional domains on top of this then there is an extra's cost of £10 per year. If you have a domain pointing at Cat2 then for it to work you need to have enough domain's in your packaged to do so.

I realise this is all confussing and I will update the knowledgebase soon to make it more understandable.

Hope this helps

Jas

Thanks

The £2 is the annual fee a company called 1&1 (mentioned above) charge, comes out at just under £5 for two years. I can change my DNS settings for free. I only want one domain name, so presumably I can point my domain at the catalyst servers for no extra charge (mega deal) ????

Sorry, I'm confused again.

I initially hosted my site on my free space at BT. I registered my domain with 1&1, where I set the destination to my personal space at Yahoo Geocities. Worked fine. I have now taken out a linux mega deal with yourselves, but don't fully understand how I route the domain to my new catalyst2 space. In the 1&1 admin I can change the DNS settings to your servers, but what do I do with the destination/forward settings? It still points to Yahoo.
Thanks.

If you've changed it to Cat2's DNS servers then you can delete any forwarding settings you've set up.
