DNS - difference?

Is there a difference between ns1.active-ns.com and ns2.active-ns.com

and

ns1.catalyst2.net and ns2.catalyst2.net?

Thanks,

Jacob

I think he means that ns2.active-ns.com isn't on site. Thus if the Cat2 core network goes down, ns2 can still be used, thus resulting in no loss of mail!

If that is the case then is there any different between putting active-ns.com down rather than catalyst2.net?

They both resolve to the same IP as far as I know, so it makes no difference what so ever.

Just done a ping and no they don't resolve to the same ips - which kinda makes sense if its off site...

Ok after talking to Paul I've worked this one out. ns1.Catalyst2.net and ns1.active-ns.net both point to the same on site box. ns2.catalyst2.com is off site, and ns2.active-ns.net is on site.

All users domains should point to ns(x).catalyst2.net and all resellers domains should point to ns(x).active-ns.com.

HTH

See Offsite DNS and Mail Backup no emails will be lost, but its still onsite by the sounds of it with plans to change it in the future.

Changing that would be good even if mails are kept and then sent when it comes back again.

Any ideas when this will happen?

Will happen in the near future, the new year, after we complete a few upgrades.
