Sub domain pointing to main domain

I have a domain hosted with Cat2. Is it possible to set up a sub domain that points to the main domain - e.g. so subdomain.mydomain.co.uk and www.mydomain.co.uk point to the same place. The reason I want to do this is because I have DotNetNuke hosted on the main domain and want DNN to detect the incoming URL and present a different portal depending on the URL. Do I need to buy a domain alias to link the two?

Hi,

A domain alias as a subdomain will do the trick.

Regards,

Jacob

Hi,

I just tried to do this (point www.thestraightpaisleys.com to thestraightpaisleys.polestone.com) and it deleted the subdomain!

Eeek. Is that supposed to happen?

Hi,

How exactly did you try and add that, you cant add an alias to a subdomain usually.

Hi Paul,

I went via cpanel - add on subdomain, "domain names that point to subdirectories". I added "thestraightpaisleys" in the domain name box, and "thestraightpaisleys.polestone.com/wordpress" in the directory box.

I got a series of errors which I didn't capture, though it did say something like "not allowed - deleting subdomain". Then the subdomain "thestraightpaisleys" got chopped. I couldn't browse to it.

I then went into "subdomains" in cpanel, and added "thestraightpaisleys.polestone.com" (which is how I'd setup the subdomain in the first place last week) - and I could then browse the subdomain.

I wasn't sure if it was because I recently moved my name servers from my old host to point to the C2 name servers. The change is still to propogate I think (as I can't ping www.the straightpaisleys.com).

More likely I have the wrong end of the stick and am trying to do something I don't understand - ie make visitors browsing to "www.thestraightpaisleys.com" actually arrive at "thestraightpaisleys.polestone.com/wordpress".

Graeme

If you can open a support ticket we can take a look at how/if this can be done for you.
