Call me stupid but...
I have been harrasing Paul with dns zone/ms exchange queries all week - Sorry Paul.
Got the dns zone sorted and spoke to the techy guys from the clients end. Basically all I've done is delete the 'mail' A Record and create a new 'mail' A Record which points to their ms exchange server. Hope this is correct????? Can anyone explain what all the other records are/do? Their tech dept said that the www A Record should be the same as my server IP? It is for the first 3 sets of numbers, but the last set is different. He then confused me talking about multiple public IPs and other stuff! I know I keep asking and I am certainly living up to being a blonde but I can't get my head around it! or am I just trying to make things harder than they really are? Will the clients site still work and mail reach the office from what I have done? Also, I presume I can delete the mail@ catch all pop account from the cat2 package because the mail record points directly to the ms exchange server???? Am I getting this? Kate |

Dont worry its what im here for :P
Ok the A record will need to point at the server IP as shown under website settings in helm. The mail xchanger (MX) record needs to point at a mail server, then all email is sent to that server. |

now i'm reaally confused
so 'mail A Record' needs to point to the ms exchange ip address which the client techy guy has given me as 195.92........ not cat2's
the mx record points to mail.mydomain.co.uk is that right????? |

backup mx
All sounds like you're setup nicely. One nice thing you can do in this config is to add an A record of mail2.mydomain.com to point to Cat2, then add a second MX record (give it a higher number meaning lower priority) to point to mail2.mydomain.com. This has now created a secondary mail server so if the Exchange server goes wrong for any reason (power cut, reboot etc) mail is caught by the catch all mail account. You just need to tell the Exchange people that you have done this and the logon details for the POP mail box.
Although not absolutely necessary I do recommend it if possible. if I what I have said above means nothing let me know and I will see if I can break it down a bit more, I have setup a couple of systems like this and it works very well. Rich
