Downtime - 25/01 - 12pm - 7pm

Our servers became unreachable around 12pm today, this was due to our sql server becoming vulnerable to the sql slammer worm.

We instantly despatched an engineer to telehouse but this took longer than expected due to delays at telehouse. All servers are now back up and we are double checking for vulnerabilities to make sure this doesnt re-occur.

We have been checking the servers and no data appears to be comprimised, the bug basically just exploited a vulnerability in sql server to turn orange into a Ddos node. We had to switch both servers off as they were maxing out or connection to the router at 100mb.

Most of the internet was brought to a standstill worldwide today with many major backbones affected such as uunet and easynet which were brought to a halt in north america and the UK.

Information about the worm is available at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2693925.stm
