Linux newbie

OK, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but here goes:

I've been having some traffic from what seems to be automated bots checking different files and lots of other things - the most annoying them being able to use my mail form and sending me gibberish mail. I've done what I can stripping PHP tags from the form elements before they get to the form handler. My question is if there's something I should do concerning permissions or other things in cPanel? I'm using mostly default settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stig
