Offsite DNS and Mail Backup

We have just implemented an offsite secondary dns server and mail backup.

This basically means if our mailserver or network is down all email will be diverted and queued on the backup mailserver until our primary is back online. So meaning no email is lost during the downtime.

This has been implemented across all domains using our ns1.catalyst2.net and ns2.catalyst2.net nameservers, the mail backup will also work on all reseller nameservers but no offsite secondary dns has been configured for resellers yet.

Please let us know of any issues you come across.

Nice

Really groovy, thanks Paul. Can I ask some boring questions just cos I'm a nosy parker...

How long does the secondary mailserver hold mail? Is it like an SMTP feed and just holds it and forwards it to the primary when all is back to normal? If so are we allowed to use this for domains where the primary mailserver isn't Cat2? In this case will it just forward to the primary mail record (namely mail.domain.com) or to your specific mailserver/IP? I'm not too bothered as most of my clients have backup mailservers with their ISPs but it might be helpful one day.

One thing I noticed was a mismatch in the DNS records (from checkdns.net Zone version on ns2.catalyst2.net is 2004052604, but on ns1.catalyst2.net it is 2004092601. Check that your secondaries are set up to load zone from primary).

I am really impressed with this improvement, well done! It's even in another country! Nice. Must admit that I am really glad I chose Cat2 and recommend all my clients to use you (through me of course...).

The mail will back up everything that has a record on orange.catalyst2.com. It will hold the mail until it can pass it on back to orange. So if your mail goes through orange and is forwarded else where then it will be backed up.

HTH

Richard,

Yea i noticed the zone issue on a few domains and ive contacted the developers of the dns software we use to find out why it isnt reporting the correct zone versions even though the data is correct.

All domains on our primary mailserver are mirrored so feel free to point backup mx records at mailbackup.active-ns.com, however it will only forward to orange.
