reasons for 404 errors

Evening!

What reasons are there for 404 errors, we had 20 mins of 404 tonight, i have a couple of sites on cat2 and only 1 was affected, so im curious as to know what the likely causes are

the site that was showing it was www.thephotographyforums.com, i have 2 other sites with you(one in my name and one i recommended)and they both worked ok, so it was more of me wondering what causes them!
