Extracting a .tar.gz file with full permissions ??

Hi all,

I am trying to install a PHP application in my webspace.

It comes as a .tar.gz file which needs to be extracted using 'TAR' - and various options - to make sure folder/file permissions aren't lost.

Is TAR installed on catalyst2 servers ? If so, how do I use it ? I have the same application installed on another host and extracted the file via a telnet session to the server ? Can I telnet to my webspace here ?

If it isn't - any suggestions on how I extract the file hierarchy correctly ? Simply 'extracting the file' in the cPanel's File Manager doesn't keep the correct permissions

TIA for any help.

Regards,

Adam Brunt
